Some of my best winter memories are Tobogganing anywhere there was a decent hill. My whole family would load up and we would set out to find a fast hill to sled. I always was in the front – supposed to steer – like you can do that in a sled! It was a whole family affair – often grandfather, cousins, uncles all making the best of Northeast Ohio winters. Whether it was ice skating or sledding you simply have to get our there to avoid CABIN FEVER!
If you do not – you do run the risk of you or someone in your house channeling there best Jack Torrance in the Stephen King’s Novel -- The Shining!
Here are some ways to simply tackle the winter weather and avoid Cabin Fever!
Build snow forts – Always fun as a kid to build a fort, use it as a base to launch your snowball attacks. Kids love to build things and snow is awesome with a little imagination.
Try tracking – I love to do this as an adult. Look for tracks in the snow and try to identify the animal or animals that left them. Go to your local metro park or even city park to see what you can find. Kids love to explore new things and nothing excites them more than learning about animals around them.
Break out the binoculars – it is easier to see birds and other wildlife in the winter. No leaves on the trees make it easier to spot the Hawk or get a good look at that beautiful Cardinal on the pine tree.
Head to the playground. You might be surprised how your kids will enjoy the playground even in the snow. And you will likely have it all to yourself! Bring bubbles – and watch them freeze in the cold.
GO SLEDDING! – Yes this is fun for everyone! You can find used sleds almost anywhere and you will be surprised to see how many people are out sledding! Where we live we have shelters that build fires – people pack lunches and spend the day as the kids and adult have fun up and down the hill.
Skate, snowboard, or ski. Get out there and dive into the white stuff! I know we love skiing – and it is a great way to avoid CABIN FEVER!
